about

We Gather Together was a song we used to sing in elementary school. No one knew what the hell “hasten and chasten his will to make known” meant and no one told us. They also never told us it was originally a Dutch hymn written in 1597 to celebrate their victory over the Spanish in the battle of Turnhout. How it turned into an American Thanksgiving tune is a bit of a mystery. And I still don’t understand the lyrics.
I got the Charles Ives gazebo band out for this one. They are an enthusiastic bunch and it was a bit difficult to reign them in, especially the glockenspiel player. I finally had to have him march off so we could end the tune.
