about

The first of two compositions by Carlo Gesualdo, the Prince of Venosa. He’s infamous for murdering his wife and her lover and spending the rest of his life composing madrigals, supposedly regretting what he had done. That’s the story anyway. He wrote six books of madrigals that progressively got stranger and stranger. The chromaticism in the writing really didn’t appear again until the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A great favorite of Igor Stravinsky, who championed his music, and even wrote a composition in Gesualdo’s style.
