about

Johann Heinrich Schmelzer was a court composer for Ferdinand III, who was the head of the Holy Roman Empire from 1637-1657. He loved music and supported many musicians through his patronage. This piece is a tombeau (basically, a musical tombstone) composed on his death. It's a bit past the era of the other pieces but it's both so sad and so strange, I couldn't leave it out. Ferdinand must have been a fascinating guy!
